Part I - Link Between Homosexual Promotion & Penn State Catholic Community

Did a Penn State priest ignore Bishop's directive on pro-homosexual event participation?

As reported last week, Father Joseph Hlubik a Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown Priest and Campus Minister at Penn State University took part in what was billed as a, "Service of Affirmation of the Human Dignity of LGBT People."

A similar service took place around the same time in 1996. The service was then called, "Honoring Sexual Diversity" and was sponsored in part by the Penn State Catholic Community, whose name appeared at the bottom of the promotion flyer.

Shortly after that service an unrelated event took place involving artwork on campus that many people found to be offensive and anti-catholic. Due to these events a Catholic resident of State College and employee of Penn State University Mr. Gary Morella wrote Bishop Joseph Adamec ordinary for the Diocese.

Mr. Morella received a response from Bishop Adamec in a letter dated February 10, 1997. In that letter which the Diocese Report obtained a copy of, Bishop Adamec states in reference to the sexual diversity service, "You also wrote to me in regard to a service which appeared to promote the homosexual life style. Since Monsignor Boggs responded to your letter, I researched the matter. It appears that even when our Catholic campus ministers explain to others the position of the Catholic Church and are assured that our sensitivities will be respected at a particular event, the promise is not kept. The other campus ministers have been informed that we will not be a part of similar functions."

Since that time the Penn State Catholic Community as been involved with or sponsored the following activities.

  • Service of Affirmation of the Human Dignity of LGBT People - 10/18/00
  • Fr. Hulbik signed an ad in the Daily Collegian which was sponsored by pro-homosexual groups. -- spring 99
  • Fr. Hlubik attended a PFLAG (Parents And Friends of Lesbians and Gays) awards dinner. -- spring 99
  • Unity Days (promoted in PSCC Sunday bulletin) - 4/28/98
  • Christian Affirmation Service - Honoring Sexual Diversity - 10/11/96

In addition the Penn State Catholic Community has continued to work with the United Campus Ministries which promote the most extreme perverse sexual activity. The following is just one of many functions this group has promoted at the University.

  • Photo of "Transgender Minister" - 4/06/98
  • Drag queen challenges societal ideas of gender - 4/06/98

It should be noted that while the service that took place this past October was billed as an affirmation of the human dignity of the person, (no doubt a description used intentionally to absolve the involvment of a Catholic since affirming the lifestyle is in contradiction to Catholic moral doctrine) the comments by those quoted in the Daily Collegian clearly show that the service was actually affirming the homosexual lifestyle.
